An opinion piece by Raritan Headwaters Association Executive Director Mara Tippett was published by NJ.com, raising concerns about the rapid expansion of large-scale data centers in New Jersey and the potential impacts on drinking water, source-water lands, aquifers, streams, private wells, and local communities.
The piece, “We can’t drink data: Why N.J. needs a moratorium on large-scale data centers,” argues that New Jersey needs a temporary pause on new large-scale data center approvals while the State develops clear, enforceable standards for water use, energy demand, siting, chemical disclosure, stormwater, wastewater, and public health protections.

RHA is one of more than 60 organizations that have supported calls for stronger state action on large-scale data centers. Our focus is simple: New Jersey’s digital future must not come at the expense of the water that sustains our homes, farms, businesses, ecosystems, and communities.
This issue is especially important in the Highlands and other source-water regions, where land-use decisions are water-supply decisions. Before large-scale data centers move forward, communities deserve clear answers: Where will the water come from? How much will be consumed? What happens during drought? How will private wells, aquifers, streams, reservoirs, wastewater systems, and ratepayers be protected?
How residents can get involved
Residents can help by asking local officials whether large-scale data centers are permitted under current zoning or redevelopment plans; supporting local ordinances that prohibit or restrict large-scale data centers in water-sensitive areas; contacting the Governor and state legislators to request a temporary moratorium; and attending municipal, planning board, and zoning board meetings where land-use decisions are made.
RHA will continue advocating for source-water protection, PFAS remediation, responsible land use, and clean, safe water for all.
