The de-icing and anti-icing applications we apply to paved surfaces eventually makes its way into streams and aquifers – increasing the salinity above healthy levels for people, fish and wildlife. Local, county and state agencies are responsible for ensuring safe roadways during winter conditions and adhering to regulations on road salt applications. Join the first of an ongoing discussion of Road Salt Management Planning that will include sharing of ideas, opportunities, innovations and challenges of dealing with snow and ice in a way that balances safety, budgets and environmental health. The Road Salt Roundtable will be a series of meetings, with presentations from practitioners and discussion among municipalities in how they are attempting to strike this balance.
