If your household’s drinking water comes from a well, how do you know it’s safe and free of contaminants? You don’t, unless you have it tested!

Raritan Headwaters is working to make well testing easier and more convenient for approximately 60,000 local households that depend on privately owned wells.

Our Well Testing Program Manager, Samantha LaRocca, has scheduled “community” well testing events in eight local municipalities from Saturday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 31, with additional events possible later in the fall.

Four out of five households in the upper Raritan River watershed – which includes parts of Hunterdon, Somerset, and Morris counties – rely on well water. It’s very important for residents with wells to have their water tested to ensure it’s safe for them and their families to drink.
For decades, Raritan Headwaters has offered well water testing at discounted prices from a certified laboratory. Test kits are available year-round at the organization’s offices in Bedminster and Flemington.

Each fall and spring, RHA makes well testing more convenient by scheduling “community” well testing events in towns throughout the watershed. You don’t need to be a resident of those towns to get your water tested at a community event. These events are open to everyone. RHA wants to protect public health and clean water, so we try to make testing as simple and accessible as possible.

Community well-testing events are also open to residents on public water who are concerned about possible contamination from old lead pipes in their homes.

Events will be held in the following towns this fall. Full details for each event, including the option to register online, are available at www.testmywell.org.

Chester Township and Borough – Test kits will be sold on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chester Township Municipal Building, 1 Parker Road, Chester. Return samples on Monday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Township Municipal Building.

Delaware Township – Test kits will be sold on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Delaware Township Municipal Building, 570 Rosemont Ringoes Road, Stockton. Return samples on Monday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Public Works Garage, 816 Sergeantsville Road, Stockton.

Raritan Township – Test kits will be sold weekdays only, Sept. 21 through Oct. 2, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Raritan Township Municipal Building, 1 Municipal Drive, Flemington. Return samples on Tuesday, Oct. 6, or Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Municipal Building.

Mendham Township – Test kits will be sold on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Mendham Township Municipal Building, 2 West Main Street, Brookside. Return samples on Monday, Sept. 28, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Municipal Building.

Hillsborough Township – Test kits will be sold on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hillsborough Municipal Complex, 379 S Branch Road, Hillsborough. Return samples on Monday, Oct. 5, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Municipal Complex.

Readington Township – Test kits will be sold Saturday, Oct. 10; Tuesday, Oct. 13; Wednesday, Oct. 14; and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at various times and locations, with some same-day pick-up and drop-off opportunities available. See www.TestMyWell.org for details.

Tewksbury Township – Test kits will be sold from Monday, Oct. 19, through Tuesday, Oct. 27, weekdays only, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Tewksbury Township Administration Building, 169 Old Turnpike Road, Califon. Return samples on Wednesday, Oct. 28, or Thursday, Oct. 29, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Administration Building.

Kingwood Township – Test kits will be sold on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Kingwood Township Municipal Building, 599 Oak Grove Road, Frenchtown. Return samples on Monday, Nov. 2, from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Municipal Building.

Tests are available for a variety of potential water contaminants. The basic kit tests for coliform bacteria and nitrates, two important indicators of drinking water quality that should be tested annually. Testing is also available for arsenic, lead, volatile organic chemicals, PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as the “forever chemicals”), radon, uranium, copper, manganese, glyphosate, and other contaminants.

In 2025, Raritan Headwaters tested water from 1,322 wells in 35 local towns. A total of 6,437 individual tests were conducted.
