Highlands Regional Watershed Plan
Presented by Dr. Chris Obropta
Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA), Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program and NJ Water Supply Authority received a grant from the NJ Highlands Council to develop a Regional Watershed Restoration & Protection Plan (WRPP) for the North and South Branches of the Raritan River and the Black/Lamington River.
Dr. Chris Obropta presents the first 3 of 9 essential elements for each of the three watershed areas making up the Highlands Regional Watershed Plan.
1.) Identification of the causes and sources of nutrient loading
2.) Estimation of the load reductions expected for the management measures
3.) Recommendation of nonpoint source (NPS) management measures to address the causes and sources
These plans will provide a roadmap for improving water quality in the Raritan Headwaters region. By identifying and prioritizing restoration projects, these plans will be the key to unlocking future funding opportunities. This is the first step towards implementing real-world solutions that will ensure clean water for our communities.
